Ground reality of Religion in Contemporary India India today could legitimately be described as a religious country. In fact, it may be more appropriate to say that the country is becoming more and more religious’. All spheres of life, both individual and collective are increasingly tending to be moved, determined and also constituted by what could only be called ‘religion! Take, eating, dressing, starting or ending any job, through an endless series of what are known as local and national festivals, different stages of a person’s life and also after his death etc., to speak of the individual life, are all infused and suffused with religion. The collective life, even the political life of the country is no less religious! It is not anymore possible to see where politics begins and religion ends or religion begins and politics ends. Secularism, whatever it meant in the Indian context is no longer an issue.
