Description
Muslim women in India havebeen at the centre of recent controversies, but their perceptions of their social situation have remained generally unarticulated. This book seeks to fill this lacuna and provides a Muslim feminist perspective on Muslim women in India by bringing together contributions by Muslim women scholars, professionals and social activists. The papers included in this book cover a wide range of themes and dimensions and deal both with the position accorded to women in Muslim theological literature and the empirical realities of their life in India. Their contribution to the national movement, performance in education and employment and women’s struggles are discussed in their national and regional dimensions. The book challenges the widely prevalent view that the problems Muslim women face are related to their faith and its prescriptions and argues that they arise from poverty and lack of education. They need to be made aware of their rights in Islam And in the Constitution to realise their full potential in the community and society. This book offers a radically different perspective from that of other books on Muslim women in India.
