The Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College of Aligarh which was established by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan in 1875 was “the first modernist organization in Islam.”It was both an institution and a movement. In 1920 it developed into a University. The present work surveys the first twenty five years of its history on the basis of original records, reports and archival material. The first three chapters which deal with:The Idea of a University,The Struggle for the University,The Establishment of the University -give a graphic account of the stages through which the movement passed from demand to charter. It gives detailed account of seven Vice-Chancellor from Maharaja of Mahmudabad to Dr. Zia-u’d-din Ahmad.
