Sayyid Jamal al-Din al-Afghani is regarded as one of the most original and dominant personalities of modern Muslim world. Born in 1838 A.D., he was brought up in Iran, where first his father and later Sheikh Murtaza Ansari (the leading Shii Mujtahid and most prominent citizen of Najaf) played an important role in his traditional education. Later on his interaction with the ulama and elite of the times, widened his insight and he grew into a scholar of repute. Jamal al-Din’s sojourn to a number of countries during the later years of his life are significant in the sense that they exercised a momentous influence on his later career.
