Description
This work is not a venture in the domain of the philosophy or history of religion. Its aim is rather to open a new window and afford a new methodological vantage point to see anew the entire landscape of human cultural history with all the variations and vicissitudes of its growth and movement. The episodic varieties of historical mosaic comprising the various religious- philosophical revolutions, sectarian discords, social-political upheavals and the advancements in science and achievements in arts are all seen to follow a pattern the basic underlying reality of which is the man’s proclivity to move into extremes while yet craving and struggling for the ideal of moderation. This is of course more overtly seen to be true in the case of ‘pagan’ culture forms of earlier times as reflected into the writings of our three philosophers namely, Plato, Augustine and Aurobindo. But, as our Nietzschean study would show, the present modern or post-modern culture too is subjected to the pressures and pulls of same historical forces and is, for that reason, structurally contiguous with its ‘religious past’.
