The Rajasthan, Waqf Conference on the ‘Protection, Maintenance and Development of Awqaf held in Jaipur during 2002 was organized by the Institute of Objective Studies and All-India Milli Council. It was a very well attended and successful conference. Its topical theme evoked much interest. Therefore the publication of the conference papers and proceedings appeared necessary to spread the good sentiments expressed during the conference and also to revive the popular interest in the institution of waqf.Majority of the existing awqaf in India were created long back, in some cases hundreds of years go. Upto the Mughal period, supervision of awqaf was the responsibility of certain well identified officials who kept a close watch on them.
