Description
History of the Shattari Silsilah is a unique and maiden attempt, based on the original sources found in various books and corners of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Mumbai in private and public collections and painstakingly tapped by the author after extensive travels. An attempt has been made to construct as complete a picture of the lives and activities of the Shattari saints belonging to Jaunpur, Bihar, Assam, Malwa, Gujarat and the Deccan, as the source consulted by him permit. The impact of the Shattaris on the religious and social life of the country has been thoroughly investigated and their relations with the state have been carefully examined. The ideology of the silsilah and its synthetic and syncretic elements have been brought out lucidly. The biographical accounts of the Shattari saints have been prepared with great caution and research. The legendary coatings round the persons of the Shattari saints have been removed after a careful and critical scrutiny of the available hagiological literature. No English work has so far seen the light of the day on the history of the Shattari silsilah in India and thus the present work goes a long standing in the History of the sufis in India.
