At the beginning of this study an attempt has been made to describe the early settlement of Muslims in Assam, and their contribution to the agriculture, literature and political life of Assam. Apart from the popula tion, there is a considerable population of other ethnic and linguistic minorities, such as Bengalis, Hindus, Tribals, Nepalese and Marwaris. A brief introduction to these minority communities has also been included.
