The idea of teaching environmental studies and world history in elementary and higher grades in Schools has caught up with the traditional Pattern of education. This series provides basic information on social studies and world history at a glance in a graded form. Hence, it is at once a serious study and also a light and easy -to-Understand sketch of events and the environment specially produced in a simple, informal style and language to suit the students Needs.
History is not just a set of events, while the environment and society is not just a collection of people, Structures and natural Phenomena. This book studies not just the changes in our world and environment but also the Why of these events and the unwritten law operating behind the turns and fluctuations of events. Therefore, the facts and events are not narrated in a mechanical style but in an informal, conversational, logical and argumentative form prompting the student to think, question and weigh facts for himself thereby sharpening his ability to opine and think independently on healthy lines.
It must be mentioned here that the sucess of the book depends on the teaching style and the teacher’s ability to be creative, refreshingly conversational and cheerfully interactive in order to convey facts in a dynamic, well-planned, step-by-step conversation. By presenting comparisons and arguments, he must prompt the student to think, question and judge events.
The Teacher must bear in mind that the purpose of teaching social studies is not memorization of events, dates and facts. The Purpose is to understand human behaviour, to gain an understanding of the rights and wrongs of past and present cultures and their impact on man’s welfare and on the world. The students must be guided to think freely and judge the positive and negative Points of various cultures. Free discussions and debates should be arranged in a guided way.
Teaching will be made easy and effective by referring to the Points in A Note to the teacher and Teaching Aids mentioned at the end of the book.
