This work titled Sarandib. An Ethnological Study of the Muslims of Sri Lanka is by far the most comprehensive of its kind. It is the culmination of much research, inquiry and field studies on the society and culture of the country’s major Muslim groups, the Moors, Malays, Memons and other Muslims of Indian origin who though of different ethnic origins, share the common faith of Islam. The work is multidisciplinary in scope and contains detailed information on aspects like ethnic origins, language, settlements, birth, marriage and funeral customs, dress and ornamentation, culinary fare, medical remedies, names and titles, occupations, social organisation, ceremonial observances and religious and folk beliefs. Not only does this study corroborate and substantiate established facts, but it also postulates some new ideas and theories which should stimulate further research and inquiry.
