Description
History jsa complex subject particularly in societies which were colonized in different forms at various points of time where numerous versions of struggle for independence are available but not really documented. Independent India’s historiography was dominated by the left liberal Gandhians resulting in an overdose of the role played by the leaders of the Congress Party but ignoring the historical role played by others particularly those on the margins. Subsequently, the Hindu right also brought in their own historians and countered many narratives regarding the freedom movement. It is not without any purpose that legends like Dr Ambedkar, Jyotiba Phule and Periyar don’t find any mention in our ‘mainstream history discourse. Under pressure for the past few years, they were simply relegated to status of ‘social reformers’. The Adivasi resistance against the colonial rulers began much before 1857 but their struggles are simply referred as ‘localised’.
The binary of Hindu-Muslim suits all kinds of history project as the resistance of the low castes from all segments is then relegated to merely social revolt and therefore two princely states of Peshwas and Travancore where caste based discrimination had an official legitimacy never got exposed to students. The present work is an attempt to understand history writing and raise extremely important questions about the role of Dalits and marginalized in our freedom movement.
