Description
Approximately half of the total population of the city of Calcutta lives in its slums which are among some of the darkest spots in the city as areas of poverty and miserably substandard housing condition. Life in the slums is, however, well organized. On account of the enormous number of people compressed into its overcrowded bustees, Calcutta is often called city of slums. Socio-economic studies of the slums are, however, few and far between, though some useful data have been collected by C.M.P.O. and C.M.D.A. on several aspects of the city’s problems including the slums. Their focus is, however, mainly on the area’ rather than the people. The present report is based on survey of a selected bustee in north calcutta namely Parsi Bagan. Data on living condition of the people including literacy. education, economy, occupational pursuits and housing condition in the bustee, statistically presented, give a gloomy picture of the life of the bustee people who are otherwise predominantly hard working craftsmen in need of some little encouragement in their self endeavour for self improvement.
