Historiography is a progressive science, in the sense that it seeks to provide constantly expanding and deepening insights into a course of events which is itself progressive. This is what I should mean by saying that we need a constructive outlook over the past (Carr). Only a conducive atmosphere to the development of a constructive outlook over the past may facilitate a similar outlook in solving the present problems. However, not only history but historiography has also been given only scant attention In most Indian universities historiography is being taught as a subject of study, followed by a study paper or project work at the PG level. But in the examination-oriented system of education, this subject, like other sub jects, is learned and forgotten after the examination is over. The same trend continues at the M.Phil. level also, little attention being paid to the applica tion of research methodology in the preparation of research work. It is the firm belief of the author that this type of approach towards history education and research has made this discipline a soft-option and non-essential subject of study. Hence, the main objective of this work is to kindle the awareness of the people so that society may be benefited by a proper and enriched scheme of history education and research.
